David Lyons, M.D., M.P.P

Dr. David Lyons’ journey began amidst the challenges of growing up between South Los Angeles and the Tijuana border in San Diego, where financial instability led to frequent moves. Despite the adversity he faced, including homelessness, he graduated high school. Seeking stability, he joined the Navy and served for five years, including a deployment to Fallujah, Iraq, during the Iraq War. After his military service, Dr. Lyons rebuilt his life and returned to school with a passion to pursue a medical career. His resilience and determination shaped his path to success.

During college, Dr. David Lyons juggled studies with impactful volunteer work, including training teen leaders to advocate for anti-bullying policies and delivering inspiring talks at underserved schools. His dedication extended to researching homophobia and palsy, all while earning his degree in Cellular/Molecular Biology and a minor in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at San Diego State University.

Accepted into UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, he founded the first Southern California LGBT Health Conference and championed minority health causes. Simultaneously pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy, he lobbied for healthcare reform, led a non-profit medical association, and volunteered at clinics for the homeless and in Haiti. Ultimately, Dr. Lyons earned both his Medical Doctorate and Master of Public Policy from UCLA.
