RESILIENT BEGINNING
During his early years, Dr Lyons faced many challenges that shaped who he is today. His father was a strict disciplinarian and a devout evangelical who believed in corporal punishment which led to fear and internalized homophobia. He also viewed him as the smartest person in the world and although his harshness had a deep impact on Dr Lyons, his intelligence and work ethic instilled the importance of hard work. Conversely, his mother was fun and affectionate whose infectious laughter and hospitality produced his desire to have the same affect on others. However, her struggles with gambling added another layer of complexity to his family life. At in elementary, middle, and beginning high school dealt with bullying and was beat up multiple times. Under the radar, he suffered sexual abuse from family member. His parents faced employment and financial struggles when he was 9 leading to food and housing instability. Outlets were limited given his family’s struggle with poverty after several life changing events, but prioritizing laughter helped tremendously. As a teenager, the difficulties at home and pressure to start working at the age of 14 led to influences that started him on drugs and alcohol.
NURTURED ASPIRATIONS
As a kid, he was captivated by surgeries on TV, such as liposuction videos on the Discovery Channel even though they grossed out his family. In seventh grade, he chose to be a doctor for a career assignment, but by high school, failing grades, struggles with addiction, and the pressure to work starting at 14yo made that goal seem out of reach. He began to turn things around after a school counselor intervened and provided a sense of self worth he didn’t have before. While working and attending regular classes, he took adult school some evenings and was able to graduate HS on time. Unfortunately, he suffered unstable housing and couch surfing shortly after. Eventually, he became a medic by joining the Navy as a Corpsman.
Joining the military was a significant milestone for him, providing much-needed stability after years of uncertainty. However, it came with struggles, including a difficult marriage at 21yo, intended to support a pregnant friend and become the father he never thought he’d be. However, her lies and manipulations about the pregnancy turned into a chaotic and toxic situation. While on deployment was when the lies came to the surface which resulted in a med evac after 8 months in Fallujah, Iraq. He had to navigate divorcing her as she left town to escape any prosecution of her financial crimes. Experiences like being lied to by loved ones was not uncommon, but this experience shaped a large part of his resilience and the importance of surrounding himself with more positive meaningful connections. Additionally, as a Corpsman he was introduced the healthcare field which reignited his childhood dream of becoming a doctor. After leaving the military, he returned to community college, slowly working towards that goal.
